Translating values, philosophy, and practice into a living digital experience

Studio Akēka is an architecture studio where architects, engineers, and craftsmen come together to design climate-friendly buildings rooted in responsibility, collaboration, and curiosity. The goal of this project was not simply to design a website, but to create a digital space that reflects who Akēka is: bold, ethical, nature-driven, and deeply human.
I partnered closely with the founders as a product designer and consultant, with full creative freedom and a shared ambition: to build something original, expressive, and honest. The website needed to communicate how it feels to work with Akēka, what they believe in, and why their approach to architecture is different, before a single meeting takes place.

CLIENT & PRODUCT

Architecture as responsibility, not decoration

At Studio Akēka, architecture is understood as a long-term responsibility toward the earth, toward communities, and toward future generations. Their work is guided by natural principles, climate awareness, and the belief that good design emerges from dialogue, collaboration, and care.Inspired by nature, African philosophy (Ubuntu), and hands-on material exploration, especially bamboo, Akēka’s projects aim to balance innovation with humility. They design buildings that cooperate with their environment rather than dominate it, and they treat clients as active members of the team, not external stakeholders. The website needed to embody these principles, not just describe them.

Goal & BUSINESS OBJECTIVES

How do you design a website that feels alive?

The challenge was not usability alone, it was translation. How do you translate values like responsibility, curiosity, ethics, and collaboration into a digital experience? How do you communicate seriousness without stiffness? How do you show boldness without noise? And how do you attract new clients who resonate with this way of working, without overselling or simplifying it?

The site had to be: distinctive and memorable. Emotionally expressive, yet calm. Clear about Akēka’s philosophy and approach. Inviting, not performative.

APPROACH

Designing identity, not just interface

This project was built on trust and creative freedom. From the start, the collaboration felt like a shared exploration rather than a transactional brief. Instead of starting with wireframes, we began with conversations: How does it feel to work at Akēka? What kind of clients feel like a natural fit?
What should people sense within the first 10 seconds on the site?

From there, the website was shaped as a digital extension of the studio’s culture. The structure, typography, color, motion, and copy all work together to express openness, confidence, and care. One of the key design decisions was introducing three distinct color modes, allowing the site to shift mood while preserving a consistent identity. This reflected Akēka’s belief in balance, adaptability, and plurality, different contexts, one coherent system.

PROCESS

From philosophy to structure

The process combined strategic thinking with hands-on design execution:
• Clarifying Akēka’s core values, tone, and positioning
• Translating architectural philosophy into digital language
• Designing the information structure around ideas, not services
• Crafting a visual system that feels bold, natural, and humanIterating closely with the founders to ensure authenticity

Rather than optimizing for conversion patterns or trends, the focus was on coherence and truth, designing something that would age well and feel aligned with Akēka’s long-term vision.

RESULTS

A website that feels like the studio

The final result is a website that communicates Akēka’s identity with clarity and confidence. It does not try to appeal to everyone, and that is precisely its strength. From the first interaction, the site sets the tone for collaboration. It attracts clients who resonate with Akēka’s values and way of working. It feels serious without being distant, warm without being informal.Everything about it feels considered. Crafted. Alive. Most importantly, it gives Akēka a digital home that reflects how they actually work: with care, curiosity, and a strong sense of responsibility.

Why this project mattered to me

Designing with trust changes everything. This project reminded me why design partnerships matter. When trust, openness, and shared values are present, design stops being about deliverables and becomes about meaning. Studio Akēka didn’t ask for a “nice website.” They asked for something honest. And that made all the difference.
