Building a global destination for puzzle lovers and digital artists

Jigsaw Puzzle Universe is the world’s leading digital destination for jigsaw puzzle enthusiasts and visual artists. The product combines classic puzzle gameplay with a creative marketplace, allowing artists to showcase and sell their work while users enjoy hundreds of original, high-quality puzzles.
My role was to design an intuitive, joyful, and community-driven experience that appeals to a broad audience, especially users aged 50+, while supporting a scalable ecosystem for artists and long-term business growth.

More than a puzzle app

Jigsaw Puzzle Universe is not just a mobile game, it is a creative platform connecting puzzle fans with artists from around the world. The app offers users a vast library of original digital artwork transformed into engaging jigsaw puzzles, along with challenges, achievements, and social features.

For artists, the product opens a new distribution and revenue channel, enabling them to reach a global audience and monetize their work through gameplay. The result is a unique ecosystem where entertainment, creativity, and commerce coexist in one seamless experience.

Goal & BUSINESS OBJECTIVES

Designing simplicity, joy, and community at scale

The primary goal was to design the simplest and most user-friendly jigsaw puzzle app on the market, leveraging behavioral psychology to maximize enjoyment, retention, and long-term engagement. The challenge extended beyond gameplay, this was about building a product users and artists would genuinely want to be part of.

From a business perspective, the objectives focused on creating a category-leading product in the mobile jigsaw puzzle space, reaching the widest possible audience with a strong emphasis on the 50+ age group, and fostering a self-organizing community of users, artists, and fans. The product needed to balance accessibility with depth, fun with structure, and creativity with commercial viability.

proCESS

Iterative, data-driven design focused on real users

Creating an optimal product required continuous learning from both the market and real user behavior. The process was built around iteration, experimentation, and A/B testing, ensuring that every feature and interaction was validated before scaling.

The work progressed through four structured phases: research and discovery to understand trends, competitors, and stakeholder goals;,synthesis and definition to translate insights into personas, user journeys, and clear product direction; ideation and design to explore flows, information architecture, and visual language through wireframes and prototypes, and finally, implementation, where designs were refined, tested, and delivered in close collaboration with developers. This approach allowed the product to evolve confidently while remaining grounded in user needs and business goals.

RESULTS

A product users and artists want to be part of

The app successfully launched and quickly gained traction, validating both the product vision and execution. Beyond the numbers, the product established itself as a trusted space for entertainment and creativity, attracting both loyal users and a growing community of artists. Simplicity, accessibility, and fun proved to be strong drivers of retention, while the integrated art marketplace unlocked new revenue opportunities and long-term platform growth.

While the mobile app is the core user-facing product, its success depends on a robust platform built specifically for artists. This internal web-based system enables artists to publish new graphics, manage existing artwork, and track how their pieces perform in the game.

Artists can monitor usage statistics, game counts, and earnings, manage pricing, and handle financial matters in one centralized place. The platform was designed to be as simple and transparent as possible, allowing creators to focus on their art while seamlessly participating in the business side of the ecosystem. This behind-the-scenes product is a key enabler of scale, quality, and long-term sustainability for Jigsaw Puzzle Universe.
